Paediatric General Surgery

  • What is Paediatric General Surgery?

Paediatric Surgery is a subspecialty of General Surgery, which involves surgical procedures carried out on foetuses, infants, children and adolescents. Sub-specialisation within Paediatric Surgery includes Foetal Surgery (performed on a foetus in the womb), Neonatal Surgery (performed on newborns), Cardiothoracic Aurgery, Neurology, Urology and Nephrology.

Paediatric surgeons use Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Procedures to treat conditions that require surgical intervention. General Paediatric Surgery requires a multidisciplinary participation from paediatric gastroenterologists, paediatric respiratory physicians, paediatric endocrinologists, dieticians and speech therapists. Common paediatric diseases that may require Paediatric Surgery include:

    • Congenital malformations such as heart defect, lung defects, abdominal wall defects and chest wall deformities
    • Surgical oncology such as Thoracic Surgery
    • Separation of conjoined twins
  • Paediatric Surgery can be used to manage and treat various problems and conditions in children that require surgical intervention. Paediatric surgeons can carry out prenatal ultrasound examination on foetuses inside the womb, in collaboration with radiologists, to diagnose any foetal abnormalities. Depending on the results, they can plan corrective surgery and offer educational programmes for the parents. Paediatric surgeons can also perform neonatal surgeries on ill or high-risk newborns, and can also repair any life-threatening congenital birth defects.

Children might also suffer from traumatic injuries that require surgical intervention. Also children suffering from benign and malignant tumours may require surgical care for the resection of the tumours. Other common types of paediatric surgery include ear nose and throat procedures including tonsillectomy (tonsils removal) and placement of tubes in the ears. Paediatric surgeons also work with other specialists to treat abnormalities of the kidney, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, as well as a wide range of other paediatric surgeries.
