Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty

  • What is Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty?

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, commonly known as ballooning, is a non-surgical procedure that is used to reopen the coronary (heart) arteries that have been narrowed or blocked due to the build up of plaques (fatty deposits), restoring the blood flow to the heart muscle.

    • During the procedure, a flexible catheter (thin tube) with a deflated balloon at the tip is inserted into an artery in the leg.
    • The catheter is then slowly guided towards the affected part of the coronary artery, and the balloon inflated and deflated several times in order to squeeze the plaques against the wall of the coronary arteries.
    • This will result in the widening of the artery and the restoration of normal blood flow to the part of the heart muscle that is fed by this artery.
    • A stent (a tiny, expandable metal coil) may also be implanted to help keep the artery open and lessen the risk of re-blockage.
  • Your doctor may recommend percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty if prescribed medications and lifestyle changes are not enough to reduce the effects of the blocked arteries. Your doctor might also recommend this procedure if your symptoms, including chest pain and shortness of breath, are getting worse.

The success rate of this procedure is very high (around 90%) and the risk of complications is very low. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that does not need the use of general anaesthesia. A successful angioplasty can ease your symptoms (eg. chest pain), allow you to return to normal activity and increase your chances of long-term survival.
